The sphere is made of several discs of wood (poplar, I believe), which I cut to make the rough spherical shape. My teacher, Daniel, and I constructed a supporting structure for it to rest in the drill press. You see, we didn't have a lathe. So I used an electric sander while the drill press spun the wood. Not the safest of methods, I assure you. It worked, though. And after I obtained my sphere, I carved into it (freehand) a repeating shape, that exists 12 times on the sphere, in different rotations. The basis of the shape is pentagonal, so the sphere represents a dodecahedron. The repeating shape ended up being an abstract representation of a bird. At least, that's what I tell people.
